Refining Bad Items (or What to do with Bad Handle, Bad Pure Steel, etc)
Introduction
Anyone who has gone hunting bellwethers and goats in Athens has run
across at least some of the six commonly found bad items. These
include Bad Handle, Bad Pure Steel, Bad Steel Plate, Bad Steel Thread,
Bad Energy-collecting Crystal, and Bad Spirit Concentration Crystal.
Perhaps frustrated by the lack of clear in-game instructions, players
may be missing out on some great opportunities to use these items to
improve their weaponry and armour. As often as not, I'll find neat
little piles of these items either in the suburbs or nearby the
Blacksmith. This guide is intended to explain how players can use these
items.
The Bad News Bears
Bad Handle: This item can be used to improve the
Accuracy of certain weapons. A higher level of Accuracy will reduce the
number of misses during combat. Each successful refinement increases
Accuracy by +3 points to a maximum of +60 (failures cost -3 points).
Use these on any eligible axe, falchion, sword, or gun. (see below)
*** Eligible Items ***: As with all bad items, they
cant be used on just any weapon. As is noted, it wont work on weapons
higher than level 55, and more generally it will have to be used on one
of the sparkly weapons that you either purchase from the Blacksmith
or are awarded through various quests. (example: I can upgrade my Pig
Iron Long Blade (Old) falchion but not a regular falchion). The same
applies for hats, clothing, and jewelry. Looks for the hats that are
awarded as drops from bellwethers and goats, and refine clothing and
jewelry awarded from quests.
Bad Pure Steel: This item can be used to improve the
Attack Power of certain weapons. The higher your Attack Power, the more
damage youll do. Each successful refinement increases Attack Power by
+3 points to a maximum of +60 (failures cost -3 points). The same
restrictions apply to the types of weapons that may be refined as apply
to Bad Handle. Use these on any eligible axe, falchion, sword, or gun.
Bad Steel Thread: This item can be used to improve the
Dodge value of certain clothing. A higher level of Dodge will increase
your opponents chances of a miss during combat. Each successful
refinement increases Dodge by +1 to a maximum of +40 (failures cost -1
point). Use these on any eligible clothing, specifically your Carol
Robe and a hat.
Bad Steel plate: This item can be used to improve the
Defense of certain clothing. Each successful refinement increases
Defense by +5 to a maximum of +100 (failures cost -3 points). Use these
on any eligible clothing, specifically your Carol Robe and a hat.
Bad Energy-collecting Crystal: This item can be used
on certain jewelry items to improve your maximum HP. Each successful
refinement increases HP by +50, each failure by -50, and there are also
some no-effect results to a maximum of +750. Use these on any eligible
jewelry, specifically pendants, badges, and rings.
Bad Spirit Concentration Crystal: This item can be
used on certain jewelry items to improve your maximum SP which would
be great except these items seem to be nearly impossible to find for
most players. Each successful refinement increases SP by +10, each
failure by -10, and there are probably also some no-effect results. I
dont know what the maximum would be but I would guess that its +150
(15 x 10)
How to Refine
The process is the same for each item. Heres a step-by-step guide.
Assuming an abundance of bad items and assuming that you completed all
of the profession quests, you should end up with the following:
Altogether, that should boost your HP by 3000. Add to that the bonuses
to accuracy, attack, defense, and dodge, and youre about ready to face
most of the scary critters living in the caves of Mallorca! Too bad so
many players keep dumping these goodies.

Before you begin refining, I recommend the following:

For Eleftheria and other numerically-inclined individuals, here are
some statistics that I gathered while refining various items. For each

How to Refine
The process is the same for each item. Heres a step-by-step guide.
- Make sure that the item to be refined (e.g. your Carol Robe
going
to be a bit chilly for a few minutes!) is in your Equipment list. You
cant be wearing it or using it while your refining. - From your Item list (where these things usually hang out)
click on the appropriate item (e.g. Bad Steel Plate) and then click one
of the green empty spaces (e.g. F6, F7, F8) in your shortcut bar. - Click your Equipment list again
- Lets assume that you have placed Bad Steel Plate in F7. Press
F7 and then click on your Carol Robe in the Equipment list. (Remember
you had to take it off?) You should get a message telling you either
that the refinement was a success (added Defense) or a failure (reduced
Defense). - Press F7 again and click your Carol Robe again.
- Repeat this process until either you get a message telling you
that youve hit maximum Defense or you run out of Bad Steel Plate. - If you have Bad Steel Plate left over, right click on the F7 shortcut bar to clear it.
- Remember to put your clothes, hat, weapon, or jewelry back on!
Assuming an abundance of bad items and assuming that you completed all
of the profession quests, you should end up with the following:
- At least one weapon with Attack Power +60 and Accuracy +60
- Carol Robe with Defense +100 and Dodge +40
- Hat with Defense +100 and Dodge +40
- Pig Iron Pendant with HP +750
- Pig Iron Badge with HP +750
- Two Iron Rings each with HP +750
Altogether, that should boost your HP by 3000. Add to that the bonuses
to accuracy, attack, defense, and dodge, and youre about ready to face
most of the scary critters living in the caves of Mallorca! Too bad so
many players keep dumping these goodies.
Refinement Tips
Before you begin refining, I recommend the following:
- The name of the game is to keep going until youve completely maxed out
- Gather up a good supply of each item 100 or more. The odds
are in your favour but you dont want to run out of refining items and
leave yourself in a negative position! - Needless to say, find a safe location where you can refine without being attacked
- AFK (away from keyboard) sessions are a great way to load up
on your supply of bad items. Athens Suburbs and Genoa Suburbs are
popular locations but any site with a good supply of coyotes, jackals,
wolves, and such will do nicely. - If you ever need quick cash, there are many vendors who will
purchase these items. You can also open your own trading booth. Will
purchase prices of around 500 and sale price of 12,000, there is
considerable middle ground yet to be explored. - Speaking of prices, the Refinement Data that I obtained
suggest that it may require quite a bit of Bad Steel Thread to achieve
maximum dodge of +40. Thus, I believe that steel thread should
(logically) be the priced about twice as high as bad handle, bad pure
steel, bad steel plate, and bad energy crystals. Bad concentration
crystals are pretty much worthless and should be priced accordingly.
